Logical Fallacies - music by Jon Øystein Rosland

Picture
Jon Øystein Rosland, tenor sax player and head planner for the Jazz Orchestra, wrote his new work under the influence of Trumpian America, full of lies and fake news. The titles of his new work reflect various rhetorical strategies to convey messages that are not necessarily true. The musical result consists of a wide range of moods and grooves. Rosland gave the musicians freedom to contribute outside the written notation. The resulting musical output ranges from atmospheric meditations to intense guitar-driven tracks. Once again the guitarist Even Helte Hermansen plays an important guest role with the band.
This CD is the soundtrack to the video production showed by the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation. The recording was made in september 2020 in a Torpedo Hall at the Norwegian Fleet Headquarters in Horten.
Sound recording: Åsgeir Grong, sound mixing Ingar Hunskaar, mastering by Fridtjof A. Lindeman. Liner notes: Roger Jeffs.  Cover art: Per Ragnar Møkleby, cover design Rune Mortensen. This is Scheen Jazzorkester´s first recording on Jazzland Recordings.

"As We See it"- music by Thomas Johansson

Bilde
Thomas Johansson, international trumpet player who grew up in Skien, created his project  "As we see it" in 2018, og it was recorded at Athletic Sound, Halden, January 2019. With references to the classic Free Jazz epoch of the 60s, it has become an intense, driving musical statement. This is further amplified by the guest musicians in the band for the occasion: Dag Erik Knedal Andersen on drums and Even Helte Hermansen on guitar.

The music of "As we see it" is not a pure travel in the free. It is rather the meeting between strict arrangements and open space that create the nerve in what we hear. Sometimes I feel transported to the musicians who in the transition between the 60s and the 70s let jazz meet rock and free improvisation in successful ways. It is a demanding kind of socialising, but in the right circumstances it can be a riot.

Commuter Report: music by Eyolf Dale

Picture

Eyolf Dale wrote his genre crossing work for Scheen Jazzorkester in 2017, and it was released by  Losen Records in 2018.
The music fluctuates between complex rhythmic gymnastics and broadly romantic, sonic themes, which gives the pianist as well as the composer Eyolf Dale a chance to shine. So does the rest of the band.
The title of the album stems from Eyolfs experiences in commuting to his studio for work. It was as if the travel changed his way of seeing yesterdays output. And this had to be "reported".

"Dale employed the full sonic spectrum of SJO and his playful compositions are cleverly constructed with twists and turns and odd meters, best realized on «A Certain Kind of Basement Disco», where he positioned the piano trio against the orchestra in order to trigger joyful, rhythmic games"

Tamanoar: music by Jon Øystein Rosland

Picture

Say hello to Tamanoar, the giant anteater.
 - if I had a giant anteater in my garden and he wanted to dance, what would it sound like?

Tamanoar is the work of the Norwegian saxophonist/composer Jon Øystein Rosland,                         commissioned by Scheen Jazzorkester in 2016.
The 10 pieces forms a suite, and the music can be described as intriguing, seamless interplay,   balancing on the edge between contemporary classical music and energetic groovy jazz. The  work explores thematic material in unpredictable ways whilst making room for individual  expressions and improvisations. With a focus on the joy of playing, the band sculpts the music with the necessary expression and esthetic.

Jon Øystein Rosland is trained in both classical and jazz composition (Berklee College of    Music and The Norwegian Academy of Music). Rosland has been a playing member (saxophones) of Scheen Jazzorkester since the beginning in 2010.

PoliturPassiarer: music by Audun Kleive (2017)

Bilde
PoliturPassiarer is written for Scheen Jazzorkester with the intention to recreate the various patterns and movements of the drum set in the ensemble. This gives Kleive the possibility to move freely in his own musical landscape. Even though the collective is at the heart of the compositions, there is room for small melodies and challenging solos. The melodies are a result of Kleive passionate relationship to classical music, and one can hear echoes of the great masters in this work. Arranger and collaborator of PoliturPassiarer is Magne Rutle. The CD is released on Losen Records, www.losenrecords.no
The merits of Audun Kleive as a drummer are many. His distinctive and creative playing never fails to enrapture the audience, and has led to collaboration with international jazz musicians like Mike Manieri, Mike Stern and Pat Metheny.
Excerpts from reviews:
"
Each piece is elegantly scored and textured, with a richness in the composition, both thematically and harmonically. In addition to the scored sections, there is space for soloing, and this is variously filled by saxophone, trombone or clarinet."
"The result is a musical banquet of colorful interplay and complex sounds. There are few improvised parts, the music is composed through with delicate orchestration and totally without dead spots. Even though the music is written out as a kind of etude for drum set, scored for jazz band, the harmonies and melodies are varied and engaging, never sounding like repetitive  studies."

Excerpts from reviews::
"Fjon is a terrific album by any standards – complex, intriguing, and beautifully played by all concerned." (London Jazz - Peter Jones)
"For connoisseurs of Orchestral Jazz this album is an immediate classic, and as such deserves to be heard by as many people as possible. The elegance, modesty and discipline that this album presents is a model for all orchestral Jazz recordings and deserves to be taught at music academies as an example of good taste. Gorgeous stuff!" (Adam Baruch - The soundtrack of my life)

"It is never surpising that that what comes from the hands of Rune Klakegg is good, but this "work" with Scheen Jazzorkester surpasses all expectations....Klakegg &co has created a melodic and dynamic universe that immediately establishes SJO in the national lead among larger ensembles" (Tor Hammerø)

God tro, feil frakk: Rune Klakegg/Torgeir Rebolledo Pedersen (2012-13)

Bilde
The pianist of Scheen Jazzorkester, Rune Klakegg, composed this large scal work for the orchestra and the poet Torgeir Rebolledo Pedersen. The title: "Good faith, wrong coat - soundbook for orchestra" is inspired by one of Rebolledo Pedersens poems, and the work is like a play where the actors are gone, and only the music is left. With the aid of TRP´s freely associative, mood creating  poems, this turns into a musical melting pot in seven movements. Different musical styles meet, and new (albeit not always beautiful) music emerges. The brass band marches towards an uncertain future, a decrepit french waltz stumbles by, and the hero rides into the sunset, backwards.
The album was recorded in 2012, and released february 2013. On Grong Musikkproduksjon,

"Nedkokt frakk" is a condensed version of this recording, partly recorded live at a park concert in Skien, partly taken from the record. Possibly a little much in one sitting, but you will get an idea of what it is about.......
